    The Role:

    SHRM, the leading voice on all things work, seeks a new member of its Communications/Media Affairs team. We work with hundreds of journalists each year to tell the story of SHRM, a professional membership association, and the human resources industry. The Media Affairs Coordinator will be responsible for researching media opportunities and outlets, assisting with the development of print and digital public relations materials and working with journalists. The position plays an important role in tracking, measuring and reporting on the organization’s share of voice, as well as other metrics on media mentions.

    Responsibilities

    Your Day:

    The Media Affairs Coordinator supports SHRM’s public relations efforts:

    • Researches workplace issues, HR and employer practices and the HR profession for information that can be used in preparation for staff media interviews. 
    • Monitors news coverage and maintains a database of media clips. 
    • Produces weekly metric reports on media interviews and press mentions. 
    • Researches media outlets and creates and maintains distribution lists for press releases. 
    • Responds to journalists’ requests and answers inquiries.  
    • Plans press rooms for national events, taking primary responsibility for logistics and coordination with Events department. Reviews applications for press credentials and registers journalists. 
    • Develops editorial calendars and provides general administrative support. 
    • Promotes media mentions by writing and producing social media posts for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. 
    • Contributes to the production of photo galleries and video news releases.  
    • Writes and contributes to press releases.

    Qualifications

    Must Haves:

    • A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in public relations or communications is preferred.
    • 1 year of experience in public relations, media relations or communications roles; or 5 years of experience in lieu of a college degree.
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills are required, as is experience in strategic communications or public relations and work at a public relations firm.
    • Must possess an understanding of the use of social media in storytelling and experience with a news-clip database and media relations software.
    • Must be technology savvy with proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Must be highly organized and have the ability to juggle multiple tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines. Strong attention to detail is required.
    • Must have the ability to work as part of a team and have excellent interpersonal skills and customer-service orientation.
    • Familiarity with video editing, photography and HTML is preferred.

    Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.
